On Friday, our brother-in-law, Jerry, and our 6-year-old nephew, Gary, had a terrible fall. I won't go into details because I don't want to get it wrong (like all the news reports have been), but they fell about 25 ft onto a concrete surface out at Jerry's bunker between Monticello and Cascade.
At that time, Gary was airlifted to UIHC with tummy and leg pain. Jerry was taken by ambulance to Dubuque and later airlifted to UIHC. Gary was CT scanned, ultrasounded, and x-rayed head to toe, and nothing was found. He has some nasty scrapes and bruises on his legs, back, and shoulder. He spent the night in the hospital and was released Saturday morning. He is moving a little slow but really doing very well.
Jerry, on the other hand, did not fair so well. He has fractures in the vertebrae of the neck and lower back (spinous processes, I believe), bruised lung, fractured ribs, fractured R humerus, radius, and ulna, and open wounds due to compound fractures in the arm (someone please correct me if I am wrong). His elbow is pretty messed up. He had surgery late Friday night on the humerus and ulna. He had another surgery this morning (I haven't heard the results, yet). Needless to say, he is in a lot of pain.
We traveled to Iowa City Friday night and were able to spend time with Gary. We didn't see Jerry at all on Friday, and Mel only saw him for short periods of time on Friday. We peeked in and said hi to him for a minute on Saturday. He was in the burn unit in isolation due to the open wounds and risk for infection.
Spent some time this weekend helping Mom and Dad with Gary and Brendan on Sat and Sun. And Sunday was our 6 year anniversary. WOW! Six years already!
We had already taken today off just for the heck of it. Glad we did.
We're heading toward Monti again next weekend to help my Grandma move into an apartment, and if Jerry is still in the hospital, I'd like to visit him again. We'll also help Mel with ANYTHING she needs help with.
Please keep our guys in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks!
