Simon Estes amphitheatre in Des Moines. The arch structure isn't supposed to be in the river. See how the water is all the way up to the bridges.

380 in Cedar Rapids

May's Island in the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids. City Hall is on the island. Those things that look like ripples in the water are supposed to be bridges.
The floods of 2008 have been devastating to Iowa. Cedar Rapids has been hit hard. On the news, they said that as many as 400-500 city blocks are under water. Mercy Hospital had to be evacuated. We know some people who have been hit hard in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area. Just devastating!
Des Moines has also been affected, but not nearly as bad as CR. All the river bridges downtown have been closed and the 65/5 bypass that Matt takes to work has been closed in some spots. Water is all but lapping at Interstate 35/80 on the north side of town. Very slow traffic from all of the gawkers. The adult superstore at the Baxter exit on my way to work has been surrounded by water. That really puts a cramp into my daily stop there! ;) Here in Altoona we have been dry. The sump pump has been doing its job well.
Waterloo and Cedar Falls have also been hit hard. We have a wedding to go to on Saturday afternoon in Fairbank, east of Waterloo. We need to get on the internet to found an open route there.
We hope everyone is safe and dry. We will keep all of those affected by the Flood of 2008 in our thoughts.

My parent's house is ok...they are up on a hill on Lower Beaver. It is pretty flooded around that area though...especially as you head back down the hill to NW Beaver Drive. This flooding has been crazy!!
Have you seen the detour route they have for truck traffic?? If you want to go from Iowa City to Illinois, you have to go WEST on 80 (to DSM), north on 35, east on 20, and south somewhere. Something like a 275 mile detour. Ridiculous.
Matt and Kelly saw an aerial picture of their house on-line, and by looking at landmarks around them, estimate the water to be at least halfway up the walls of the house. Jerry had two generators there (one for Matt n Kelly, one for Kelly's parent's next door), all of his tools, work lights, several high end extension cords, a Dewalt radio, and various other odds and ends. Ouch, ouch, ouch....
